Hans Wegner
Hans J.Wegner (1914 - )
Hans Wegner’s world wide known designs are characterized by a dedication to functionality and comfort. He demonstrates a deep understanding of furniture as a tool for everyday life. His work is poetic and beautiful and like no one else he has succeeded in eliminating the antithesis between the two worlds of useful and artistic.
Hans Wegner’s long career has established him as one of the most prolific designers in Denmark and in Scandinavia. One unique talent of Wegner’s was to redesign various pieces. The China chair, for example, is an adaptation of an old Ming dynasty chair, and The Peacock chair is based on the traditional English Windsor chair.
In 1943, after having worked for Arne Jacobsen for several years, Wegner set up his own office in Gentofte, Denmark.
Many of his designs have become cult classics and a statement of Scandinavian Modern. The Valet Chair, The Flag Halyard, The Swivel and The Chair are examples of Wegner’s unique approach to design.
He has designed furniture extensively for furniture manufacturers such as Johannes Hansen, Fritz Hansen and Getama.
Hans Wegner’s designs are to be found in the permanent collections of the world’s most prestigious art museums.
