‘Clam’ armchair designed by Arnold Madsen for Madsen & Schubell,
Denmark, 1944.
Stained beech and textile. In 1944, Arnold Madsen designed the ‘Clam’ chair in his small basement workshop in Gothersgade, Copenhagen. The design has a fascinating history as it has been attributed to several designers, frequently to the Danish architect Phillip Arctander. But recent research revealed that the “Clam” is in fact the model that started the story of Madsen & Schubell.
