Carl Harry Stålhane
1920 - 1990

Carl Harry Stålhane was one of the most important figures in twentieth-century Swedish ceramics, celebrated for his long and influential career at Rörstrand. Trained as both a painter and sculptor, Stålhane brought an unusually artistic sensibility to ceramic design, shaping everything from functional tableware to monumental stoneware sculptures. His work is recognised for its refined forms, subtle movement and masterful glazes that range from deep earth tones to softly luminous surfaces.

Stålhane became artistic director at Rörstrand in the 1950s, a period during which he played a decisive role in defining the company’s modern design identity. His stoneware vessels, often characterised by organic silhouettes and a strong sculptural presence, reflect his deep interest in material experimentation and the expressive potential of clay. Many of his pieces combine traditional craftsmanship with a distinctly modern aesthetic, making his work highly sought after by collectors today.

Beyond his contributions to Rörstrand, Stålhane was a respected educator and established his own studio, Designhuset, where he continued to explore new techniques and artistic directions. His legacy is marked by a commitment to craftsmanship, innovation and the quiet elegance that has come to define Swedish ceramic art.
