Easy chair model 36 / 401 designed by Alvar Aalto for Artek,
Finland, 1933.

Birch and textile.

Stamped.

Alvas Aalto’s model 36 /401 is a high wingback armchair. The Finnish master designed this chair for his company Artek in 1933, and that same year, it was exhibited at the Milan Triennale. Cantilevered, without the need for back legs, the birchwood frame cradles and supports the comfortable, upholstered seat. This early high-back version is rare.

Alvar Aalto is a recognised master of modern architecture and design. His work includes furniture and houseware designs, which evolved organically from his architectural work. Aalto's singular aesthetic defined Finnish design like no other. Through attention to detail and innovative use of materials, his pieces achieve a sense of harmony with nature whilst combining functionalism with beauty.
