Occasional table, anonymous, for Oy Stockmann AB
Finland, 1950s

Elm.

The most compelling aspect of this occasional table is the relationship of its legs to the surface. With splayed tapering legs, the well thought out design resembles an animal — its four obtuse angles bring to mind an antelope bending down to drink water. This piece was made for Stockmann in Helsinki, Finland's most exclusive department store. Since the legs extend far out to each side, the table is very stable with extra frame support under the surface. The richness of the elm wood's colour is beautiful.
