Pair of chairs ‘Clam’ designed by Arnold Madsen for Madsen & Schubell,
Denmark. 1944.

Birch and sheepskin upholstery.

The ‘Clam’, upholstered in soft sheepskin, is among the most comfortable chairs imaginable – it is both a recognisable and desirable Scandinavian design. As the name indicates, the design resembles the sea creature with a shell in two parts.

In 1944, Arnold Madsen designed the ‘Clam’ chair in his small basement workshop in Gothersgade, Copenhagen. The design has a fascinating history as it has been attributed to several designers, frequently to the Danish architect Phillip Arctander. But recent research revealed that the “Clam” is in fact the model that started the story of Madsen & Schubell.
