Pair of “October” side tables designed by Carl Malmsten for Åfors Möbelfabrik,
Sweden, 1950s.
Birch. Exquisite cabinet making with visible joints and refined angles characterise these two solid birch side tables by Carl Malmsten, one of the most important 20th-century furniture designers from the Nordic region. It is typical of his work to have edges of tables’ surfaces angled. These particular tables’ corners are elegantly angled too, with a reset and small ridge to avoid boxiness.
In the early days, Malmsten used very rich marquetry, but he soon intensified his singular use of simplified Scandinavian lines without compromising the excellence of the woodwork. He often gave his furniture names such as “Diplomat” or “Ambassador”; in this case, he may have designed the model in “October”, hence the unique name.
