The significance of this rare Danish daybed lies in its sculptural shape. It was designed in the 1950s by the famous wood enthusiast Kurt Östervig, who was inspired by ancient Egypt and the objects found in Tutankhamun’s tomb. The elegant teak frame has an integrated, low padded Savak wool mattress upholstered into the construction.

“UD R 18757” on the plaque states the piece’s meaningful provenance. This particular bed was owned by the Utrikesdepartementet — the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs — and probably entered their collection on 18 July ’57.
