Description:

This sculptural terracotta vase by Allan Ebeling is a striking example of his experimental approach to Swedish ceramics in the mid-20th century. Handbuilt in Torshälla, the piece has a triangular footprint, with each vertical face animated by a column of rounded protrusions that swell rhythmically along the height of the vessel. The relief modelling gives the form a strong architectural presence while the repeated bulges create a dynamic play of light and shadow across the matte, unglazed surface.

The warm, natural tone of the earthenware reveals subtle traces of the hand, underscoring Ebeling’s background as both sculptor and ceramic artist. Rather than relying on colour or glaze, he allows volume, proportion and texture to carry the expression, aligning this vase with the modernist interest in pure form. Signed “AE” and standing over 45 cm high, it functions as both container and autonomous sculpture, reflecting the freedom and individuality that define Allan Ebeling’s contribution to Swedish studio ceramics.
