Johnny Mattsson was one of Sweden’s leading wood artists in the 20th century. After his education and early work years, he started his studio in the town of Gävle. He became a master of carving, leading to marvelous sculptural pieces. He primarily worked in pine, teak and mahogany, as well as recycled wood from old houses which were being demolished. Aquatic themes are recurring in Johnny Mattsson’s artistry, sailing and the archipelago being important parts of his life. The anchor is also found in the municipal coat of arms of Gävle.
