Wall cabinet with writing surface designed by Alvar Aalto for Aalto Möbler,
Sweden, 1950s.

Birch veneer.

Stamped ‘AALTO MÖBLER SVENSK KVALITETSPRODUK’.

Simplicity and an aesthetically pleasing geometry make this compact wall cabinet with its original key a notable Alvar Aalto collectable. The practical piece has a writing surface and an integrated lamp that still works; it requires no floor space and is thus a prime example of the Finnish designer’s famous functionalism.

The structure and colour of the wood are beautiful. It takes decades for birch to develop this warm honey colour with such a stunning grain structure. The stamp dates the cabinet to Artek’s production site in the Swedish town Hedemora, which produced Aalto’s pieces between 1946 and 1956 before all manufacturing was moved to Finland in the following years.

Aalto loved clean curves and bends, which he often integrated into his architecture and chair, screen, or lamp designs. This cabinet, however, is a beautiful example of his masterful execution of the rectangular.
