• The Snowflake Chandelier by Paavo Tynell

    Paavo Tynell, “The man who illuminated Finland”, became an internationally celebrated designer during his lifetime. The Snowflake is one of his most sought-after works and belongs to the most triumphant period in Finnish design. “The Snowflake is the peak production of Tynell’s career. When the light is on the lamp shines very beautifully - the snowflakes reflect the light and interesting shadows appear on the ceiling and in the room. It is indeed a highly decorative piece, an Object d’Art, even when it is not lit, a beautiful piece of art in any space, public or private” says Pekka Korvenmaa, professor emeritus in design history at the Aalto University in Finland.

    Paavo Tynell (1890 – 1973) is one of the most important 20th-century lighting designers. He was a trained sheet metal worker – a unique background that influenced his recognisable aesthetic. The company Taito Oy was founded by Tynell himself because other manufacturers considered his creations too complex for production.

  • Featured Designer: Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe

    Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe was a master jeweller and silversmith and is one of the most important Swedish designers of the twentieth century. She is known as ‘Torun’ and is the first female silversmith to have received international recognition. Throughout her career, Torun worked in Sweden, France, Germany, and Indonesia.

    Modernity London unveils a new exhibition on the Finnish lighting designer Paavo Tynell, opening on the 25th of January, just in time to celebrate his 132nd birthday. The gallery will be transformed into a showcase of just under twenty rare and unique designs by Tynell. Visitors will be transported through the story of Paavo Tynell and his work.

    Modernity has joined six local galleries to exhibit their specialities within the Westbourne Grove area.     Modernity exhibited at the Masterpiece fair in London in June/July and was awarded two prizes. One was for the best 20th century design object, the long case clock by Jens Jacob Bregnö, Denmark. The second price was for the best textile and carpets, a rare round rug by Barbro Nilsson for Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Sweden. We brought the finest pieces of Scandinavian design by masters such as Axel Salto, Peder Moos, Finn Juhl, Poul Kjaerholm, Börge Mogensen, Poul Henningsen etc, and contemporary pieces by Sandra Davolio and Carsten From Andersen.

    Modernity is featured in BBC’s extensive program “The Art of Scandinavia”, broadcasted on BBC4 and BBC Worldwide. The presenter Andrew Graham-Dixon explores the history of Norway, Denmark and Sweden through the region’s art. The third film looks at Sweden as Scandinavia’s ‘modern miracle’ focusing on artists, designers and architects of the 20th century.

    Modernity has once again sold important pieces of design to international museums. This time the famous Zig Zag chair by Gerrit Rietveld sold to the Milwaukee Art Museum in the US. The National Museum of Scotland has also recently purchased important pieces of jewellery.

    Modernity has the privilege to present four unique pieces by the renowned Danish cabinet maker Peder Moos from 1949. The furniture were made to order and produced by himself. Peder Moos' furniture has been exhibited internationally at museums in Stockholm, the Hague and New York's MoMA.

  • Axel Salto (1889-1961) — Danish Master of Ceramic Art and Modernism

    Axel Salto was born in Copenhagen in 1889 and is known today as one of the finest masters of 20th century ceramic art. After studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and commencing an initial career in painting, the artist soon became intrigued by modernism and a progressive aesthetic.

    Modernity received the award for the best historical object at the Pavilion of Art & Design in Paris in March. The jury chose the cabinet and two armchairs by the Swedish architect Carl Hörvik as the prime object at the fair.
