Rosewood and handwoven cane.
An iconic example of Danish modern design, the Basket Club Chair was designed in 1950 by Nanna Ditzel. The chairs feature a handwoven wicker shell gracefully suspended on a solid rosewood frame, the result of a remarkable collaboration with basket maker R. Wengler and master cabinetmaker Ludvig Pontoppidan.
By separating the sculptural seat from its supporting frame, the Ditzels achieved a sense of lightness and fluidity that makes the chair appear to float. This innovative approach to form and craftsmanship reflects the designers’ commitment to organic materials and human-centered comfort, hallmarks of Scandinavian modernism.
For many years, the Ditzels used the Basket Chair in their own Copenhagen home, a testament to its enduring beauty and functionality. Today, it stands as a celebrated piece of mid-century Danish furniture design, admired by collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide.
