Birch.
Bruno Mathsson’s “Book crib” model T-709 is a refined example of Scandinavian vintage design where function and sculpture are perfectly aligned. Originally conceived in 1941, this piece was produced by Firma Karl Mathsson in 1964 and reflects the designer’s lifelong interest in reading, comfort and order.
Crafted in solid birch with bent birch legs, the book crib has three angled compartments that cradle books, magazines or LPs while keeping the spines clearly visible and easy to reach. The splayed, tapering legs lift the form lightly from the floor, giving the piece an almost floating character that is typical of Swedish design from this period.
The surface shows only light, even patina, consistent with careful use, which enhances the warmth of the timber rather than distracting from it.
