Glass, steel and, cord.
This lamp from 2004 exemplifies Per B. Sundberg’s idiosyncratic approach to combining image, function, and form. Created during his time at Orrefors, the piece features a cast glass base engraved with a detailed, comic-style scene: a jeep speeding through a rural setting, rendered in stark black lines. The imagery is unexpected in the context of glass design, where such narrative illustrations are uncommon, adding a layer of irony and visual tension. A red electrical cord is routed along the contours of the base, becoming part of the composition rather than being concealed. The vertical metal stem and white lampshade contrast with the visual density of the base, balancing the object’s playful irreverence with a restrained functional profile. This work sits at the intersection of art object and domestic utility, reflecting Sundberg’s continued interest in disrupting design conventions through both material and imagery.
