Pewter, undertray in brass, chiseled and punched
This early pewter tray by Anna Petrus, created in Stockholm around 1922–24, is a rare example of Swedish metalwork from the period leading up to the Swedish Grace movement. Executed in pewter with an underlying brass support, the triangular tray features a finely chiseled and punched decoration depicting a mermaid riding a fantastical creature. The detailed engraving reveals Petrus’ sculptural precision and her distinctive ability to merge classical motifs with the emerging modernist aesthetics of the early 20th century. The work is signed A. Petrus.
The tray embodies the refinement and craftsmanship that define Scandinavian decorative arts of the 1920s. The elegant interplay between pewter and brass highlights Petrus’ innovative approach to materials, which would later shape her collaborations with Firma Svenskt Tenn. With its mythological imagery, strong graphic quality, and collectible provenance, this tray represents a significant piece of Nordic design history. Wear and minor tears are present at the corners, consistent with its age.
Signed A. Petrus.
