Description:

This sculptural glass vase by Per B. Sundberg, titled Fabula and Ariel and produced for Orrefors in 2004, exemplifies the artist’s exploration of narrative, perception, and surface within contemporary Swedish glass art.The piece features an irregular, organically shaped body punctuated by multiple lens-like protrusions that refract and distort the imagery embedded within. Photographic motifs of dogs, softly focused and rhythmically repeated, are suspended beneath the transparent surface, creating a fragmented visual field. These distortions are not incidental; they actively shape the viewer’s engagement with the imagery, amplifying the surreal and psychological tone of the work. Sundberg's integration of photographic elements within blown glass challenges traditional distinctions between medium, ornament, and message. The contrast between the controlled grid of embedded images and the fluidity of the external form reflects his interest in contradiction and layered meaning. Fabula and Ariel stands as a notable example of conceptual Scandinavian studio glass from the early 2000s.
